Commentary: Riots in New York City in 1969 launched gay rights movement

On Wednesday, when the U.S. Supreme Court announced its decision gutting the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act on grounds of equal protection under the law, a group of celebrants spontaneously gathered at The Stonewall Inn in New York City's Greenwich Village neighborhood, the site where the gay rights movement was born.
